Keep your messages private on the lock screen

Hide notification content, step by step on Samsung and Pixel phones.

About 1 minuteNotificationsGuided in Phonewell Plus

Why it helps

Anyone who picks up your phone can read message previews. Hiding the content shows that something arrived, not what it says.

What you'll notice

The lock screen shows which app sent a notification, but not what it says, until you unlock.

How to set it up

Pick your phone.

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Settings
  2. Notifications
  3. Lock screen notifications
  1. Tap "Lock screen notifications".
  2. Choose "Hide content".

Based on reports from owners and the tech press. We have not yet checked it on a phone ourselves.

Google Pixel

  1. Settings
  2. Notifications
  3. Sensitive notifications
  1. Turn off "Sensitive notifications".

From Android 16, one-time codes are also hidden on the lock screen automatically.

Based on reports from owners and the tech press. We have not yet checked it on a phone ourselves.

How to undo it

Choose to show all content again in the same screen.

Labels can differ. Menu names and their order vary between models and can change with a system update. If a step doesn't match your phone, search Settings for the feature name or one of its other names: Hide sensitive content, Lock screen privacy, Sensitive notifications.
