Why it helps

Apps use an advertising ID to build a profile of what you do. Removing it means the ads you see are less tailored to you.

What you'll notice

Apps can no longer use your advertising ID to target you. You still see ads, but they are less personal.

How to set it up

Pick your phone.

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Settings
  2. Google
  3. All services
  4. Ads
  1. Tap "Google", then "All services", then "Ads".
  2. Tap "Delete advertising ID" and confirm.

Based on reports from owners and the tech press. We have not yet checked it on a phone ourselves.

Google Pixel

  1. Settings
  2. Google
  3. All services
  4. Ads
  1. Tap "Google", then "All services", then "Ads".
  2. Tap "Delete advertising ID" and confirm.

  2. Turn off "Personalized ad recommendations".
  3. Then delete your Google advertising ID too: "Google", "All services", "Ads".

Other Android phones

How to undo it

Get a new advertising ID in the same screen, or switch personalised recommendations back on.

Labels can differ. Menu names and their order vary between models and can change with a system update. If a step doesn't match your phone, search Settings for the feature name or one of its other names: Advertising ID, Ad personalisation, Ad tracking, Personalized ads.
