Why it helps

Your phone writes down the conversation around you as it happens, which helps in noisy rooms and for anyone hard of hearing.

What you'll notice

Spoken words scroll up the screen as text a moment after they are said.

When to use it

When you or a relative cannot follow a conversation, then open Live Transcribe and lay the phone on the table.

How to set it up

Pick your phone.

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Settings
  2. Accessibility
  3. Hearing enhancements
  4. Live Transcribe
  1. Open Settings, then "Accessibility" and "Hearing enhancements"
  2. Tap "Live Transcribe" and turn on its shortcut
  3. Open it and place the phone near the people talking

Google Pixel

  1. Settings

  3. Live Transcribe
  1. Open Settings, then "Accessibility" and "Live Transcribe"

  2. Open it and allow the microphone

How to undo it

Close the app; switch its accessibility shortcut off if you added one.

Labels can differ. Menu names and their order vary between models and can change with a system update. If a step doesn't match your phone, search Settings for the feature name or one of its other names: speech to text, transcription, hearing help, captions for conversation.
